Safe Use and Mounting of Abrasive Wheels

Duration ½ Day
Intended For All employees who are required to mount, change and use Abrasive Wheels.
Course Aims To increase the awareness of individuals with regard to the identification of hazards and the assessment of risks when using abrasive wheels for grinding and cutting.
Course Objectives On completion of the course delegates will be able to:


- State the legal requirements relating to the use of Abrasive Wheels in grinding machines and cut off saws
- Identify the correct British and European Standard of eye protection to be used when dry grinding, cutting and dressing an abrasive wheel
- Describe the potential hazards and associated risks of incorrectly fitted/mounted abrasive wheels and guards (work rests where applicable) and the precautions required
- Identify the more commonly used British Standard markings of abrasive wheels/discs
- Identify the maximum permissible speed in revolutions per minute of wheels and spindles and the need to match these accordingly
- Mount the appropriate wheel/disc for the type of work undertaken
- Where applicable dress a Type 1 abrasive wheel with a Huntingdon Wheel Dresser

- Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment
- Technical Section - Structure and Components, Markings, Types, Inspection
- Short Multi Choice, Open Book Test
- Review and Summary

Presentation The course content will be introduced via formal presentation and participative training techniques, using visual aids and practical exercises to confirm understanding.
