The Personal Protective Equipment

at Work Regulations 1992

Requirements:

Personal protective equipment (PPE) should be provided where risks to health and safety arising from the work cannot be controlled by other means.

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require any PPE provided to be: 

• assessed as suitable for the risks to be controlled and for the conditions of use;
• compatible, if PPE for different risks are worn simultaneously; 
• maintained in efficient working order and good repair; 
• stored in the designated accommodation provided.

The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require the provision of certain fall-arrest equipment, including safety harnesses for work on scaffolds, etc where there is a risk of falling. 

The Construction (Head Protection) Regulations 1989 require suitable head protection to be provided against foreseeable risks of head injuries. 

Record Keeping

• The purpose of keeping records of personal protective equipment is to:
• demonstrate compliance with the law; 
• enable management to ensure that PPE is being issued, is relevant and suitable, given the particular work being undertaken; 
• assist in the defence of any subsequent civil claim alleging negligence.
